2.0 Components of the IRMA passenger counting system

The IRMA passenger counting system includes the components:

The IRMA passenger counting system is generally connected to the on-board computer, which, after each stop, polls the counts for each door, separately for boarding and alighting passengers.  This can be stored with reference to the individual stops.

One sensor is installed above narrow vehicle doors and two sensors are installed above wide vehicle doors.  When their detection range is passed by a person or persons, the passive and active components in the sensor will generate signals which are amplified and digitised in the sensor.  Through a synchronous, serial interface, these signals go into the analyser, which uses them to determine the counts, separately for boarding and alighting passengers.

As counting the passengers takes place with the doors open, IRMA needs to know when doors are open or closed. This is carried out by means of a door contact which uses the 24v of the vehicle and micro-switches already on the vehicle doors to sense an open or closed state.  This signal can be logically positive or negative depending on the configuration of the vehicle switches.

Besides the count mode, the analyser is also capable of an installation mode.  Here, the signals transmitted from the sensors to the analyser are passed on to a laptop. It displays the signals graphically in real time and thus allows installers to adjust the sensors.

Service packages are offered for analysers which have no RS-232 interface to connect them to a laptop (for analysers with an IBIS or RS-485 interface).  The IRMA passenger counting system has a completely screened design.  It fulfils the standards regarding noise immunity and emitted interference according to DIN  43321 and ENV 50121-3-2.
